about

Above Me Weeps the Sky…

This album is an expression of my personal concern about the current political state of the world. I’ve carried world-weariness inside me ever since I was a kid and I’ve always been trying to find a way to express it. I think that I have finally managed to transform my inner feelings into music.

There is a narrative traveling through the album and the separate tracks are based on an almost cinematic vision in my mind. But music is (and should be) an interplay between the composer and the audience, so there is no reason to elaborate my personal vision any further. Every listener will form their own view and understanding about the music and about the emotions it is trying to convey.

Before the compositional process begun, I already had the whole concept in my mind. Therefore the process differed from the one that led to my previous album. On my first album I was inspired by the novel sounds and methods that I was inventing and I didn’t have anything in my mind before the actual music started happening. This time it is more about the concept and the compositions. I had several ideas to match the titles before I found the right ones that I felt fitting.

Genre defining can be a nightmare to a musician. Ambient music has a certain ethos that feels right for most of my music, on the other hand many of the compositions on this album are not calm, nor do they give much space for thinking, which is how Brian Eno originally delineated ambient music. A minimalistic and slowly evolving musical environment has always been an important aspect of music to me personally, so it is certainly present, but expressiveness that is often absent in ambient music is a vital ingredient of this album as well.

I hope that my concerns about the world will be futile, as I'm inclined to think that humanity will always win in the end.

This album is dedicated to those who carry humanity within their hearts in the middle of a conflict.

about

Juha-Matti Rautiainen Soundscapes Finland

For many years I've been working as a professional musician in various bands and genres. Few years ago I cut the tip of my right index finger in an accident and I had an idea of composing ambient that could also be performed live in front of the audience, using only bass guitar. My music is minimalistic, organic and it focuses on textures and moods mixed with open impressionistic harmonies. ... more
