about

This mini album is a special project of attempting to create as scary soundscapes as possible. This interesting experiment began when I met a Finnish author Marko Hautala five years ago. Intending to get into his ”writing mode” and to set up a proper mood for the process of writing, it turned out that he listens to ambient music. Ambient can be listened in the background but, on the other hand, it rules out sonic distractions. Hautala is writing psychological horror novels and he told me that in his work he’s always primarily interested in creating a mood. As we were talking we noticed that ambient music and his works had reminiscent ethos. This led to an idea that maybe I could compose special soundscapes for him to enhance his writing. As the time went by I kept the idea in the back of my head and occasionally tried to conceive something. Four soundscapes were born and they succeeded in their aim to be as scary as possible. I know that Hautala is not listening to only dark ambient when writing, but of course it was proper enough to pursue the horror aspect in musical expression, as I think all the feelings and moods belong to music. Even the unpleasant ones.

In this project I used my bass guitar setup, modular synthesizer and some samples. There is a brief description on each track that clarifies my thoughts and indicates the instruments that were used. The track order is reversed in a way that the first born soundscape is the last one and the most recent opens the album. These tracks can be used to fuse some scary atmosphere in any place and they work well in the background while reading a horror novel. The best listening effect is achieved when reading one of Hautala’s books in the dark. I hope you dare.

about

Juha-Matti Rautiainen Soundscapes Finland

For many years I've been working as a professional musician in various bands and genres. Few years ago I cut the tip of my right index finger in an accident and I had an idea of composing ambient that could also be performed live in front of the audience, using only bass guitar. My music is minimalistic, organic and it focuses on textures and moods mixed with open impressionistic harmonies. ... more
