The Endless Now – Music for Stagnation

Paul Asbury Seaman This debut album is more subtle than 2018's Above Me Weeps the Sky. At a quick first listen it can sound like a lot of other "dusty" minimalist ambient music, parts of it will remind you of the countless long-form wave tones that are a Steve Roach trademark. In fact, The Endless Now is mesmerizing in its own distinct way, soothing and tantalizing at the same time, and all the more amazing for getting so much FEELING from one instrument! Favorite track: Emerald.

Tony Gerber I had the good fortune of meeting Juha-Matti in his country of Finland and shared the stage with him. He was the coolest surprise I encountered musically on this visit to Finland. Looking forward to the new album for 2018.

Might be hard to bear at times - but healing.
My very respect! Favorite track: The Space Between (Ambient 1).

I am Black Hill Unlike the album title, this music is moving. It's an outstanding monument of the contemporary ambient music. Thank you! Favorite track: Berlin.

about

Losing the tip of my right index finger in an accident started it all. I had to slow down. My accident gave me the opportunity to examine the aesthethic of focusing on the present – the moment right now. That is something I really need in this hasty world of ours.

I think the most intriguing music is born when you set limits to yourself. Besides my broken hand, the other limitation in this particular project was also its initiator – the bass guitar. I've tried to use my bass guitar as unorthodoxically as possible. Accidents, mistakes and the effects I've used to shape the colour of my instrument have been the source of inspiration for my soundscapes.

The compositional process was bipolar and it resonated with the outcome. In the beginning, there were the original musical ideas which I was trying to conceive, but often failed. The other end was the chosen instrument: the bass guitar, the restriction, which very often mingled with my original ideas and kept me concentrating on the things I could do – the essence.

In the end, I've tried to keep in mind the initial idea of ambient: something that can be ignored as well as listened to actively. Despite that, I noticed that I wanted to create evolving soundscapes instead of static ones. The music was originally conceived and played live. Nevertheless, I did compromise to make some overdubs for this album in order to gain the quality standards I would like it to pertain.

I hope you can now take the time to sit down, close your mobile devices and eyes and listen to The Endless Now.

Juha-Matti Rautiainen October 2016

"Slowly built upon a very graceful layer of marvelous creativity, The Endless Now – Music for Stagnation is a deeply virtuous album, thoroughly exhilarated at the rapture of a cosmic journey that begins in the immense boundaries of conscience, expanding from its own panoramic axis. With a sonorous omnipresence that revolves around the universe upon which all the musicality of the album is strictly built, this work reevaluates all the nuances, colors, arrangements and sensibilities that comprehends the universe of ambient music, delightfully making a rereading of all the necessary elements in question." - Wagner Hertzog, Merchants of Air 12/12/2016

"Hämmentävintä on, että Rautiainen on toteuttanut albumin ja näkemyksenä ainoastaan bassokitara raaka-aineenaan. Se osoittaa miehen teknistä ja tietoteknistä taituruutta, lopputulos syvää näkemyksellisyyttä. Ei kiireiselle matkamiehelle." - Retrokkiblog 3/2/2017

about

Juha-Matti Rautiainen Soundscapes Finland

For many years I've been working as a professional musician in various bands and genres. Few years ago I cut the tip of my right index finger in an accident and I had an idea of composing ambient that could also be performed live in front of the audience, using only bass guitar. My music is minimalistic, organic and it focuses on textures and moods mixed with open impressionistic harmonies. ... more
